The Santa Barbara Channel sits along one of the busiest whale migration routes on the West Coast, and you don't need a boat to catch a glimpse.
When to Watch
- Gray whales: visible during their migration, roughly December through May.
- Blue and humpback whales: most common in the summer and early fall months.
Where to Look From Shore
Elevated coastal bluffs give the best odds — bring binoculars and scan for the telltale spout before the whale surfaces fully.
