A first ocean outing goes a lot smoother with a little preparation. Here's the short list that actually matters.
Before You Leave
- Check conditions: tide, swell, and wind all shape how calm or rough the water will be.
- Set expectations: a first trip is about comfort, not distance or duration.
- Pack light: swimsuit worn under clothes, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a labeled water bottle.
Once You're There
Let a nervous kid set the pace — wading before swimming, shallow before deep. Forcing the pace is the fastest way to turn a fun first trip into a scary one.
If you'd rather have a coach lead that first outing, our Big Blue Bridge program is built specifically for kids taking their very first steps into the water — register here to get started.
