Tide pooling is one of the easiest ocean adventures to start with — no gear, no swimming required, and Santa Barbara's rocky coves are full of life at low tide.

Timing It Right

Check a tide chart before you go — the best pooling happens in the hour before and after the lowest tide of the day, when the most rock is exposed.

What Kids Usually Find

  • Sea stars and anemones: tucked into shaded crevices, easy to spot once you know where to look.
  • Hermit crabs: a reliable favorite, especially for younger kids.
  • Small fish: trapped in deeper pools until the tide returns.

House Rules

Look, don't take — tide pool creatures don't survive well outside their pools. Wet hands only if you touch anything, and always face the water, since waves can surprise you even on a calm day.

We weave this same ethic into our own programs, where marine science is taught as something to protect, not just observe — see it firsthand in our Pelagix school program.

For more on the marine life along this coast, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is a great resource.
