One of the most common questions we get from parents: should my kid start on a soft-top or a "real" fiberglass board?
Soft-Tops: Where Everyone Starts
Soft-top boards are forgiving, buoyant, and — most importantly — safe. A soft-top to the head stings a lot less than fiberglass, which matters in a crowded lineup full of beginners.
When to Move to Fiberglass
- Consistent Pop-Ups: If a kid can stand up reliably, a fiberglass board will respond better.
- Comfort in Whitewater: They should be fully comfortable paddling out and managing whitewater first.
- Coach Sign-Off: Our coaches make the call together with the camper, not on a fixed timeline.
There's no rush. Plenty of great surfers spent an entire season on a soft-top, and it never held them back — see it in action in our Summer Camp and After-School Seasons.
For the bigger picture on ocean stewardship and surf culture, the Surfrider Foundation is a great resource.
