Before a kid ever paddles out, there are a handful of ocean safety rules worth knowing cold — the kind that matter whether you're at a Sea League program or just at the beach with your family.
Rule One: Never Go In Alone
Of everything we teach, the buddy system is the rule we're least willing to bend. No one goes in the water alone — not campers, not coaches.
How It Works
Every camper is paired with a buddy for the entire session. Buddies check in with each other and with a coach every few minutes, out loud, by name.
Why It Matters
- Faster Response: A buddy notices trouble before a coach on the beach can.
- Confidence: Nervous first-timers do better knowing someone is watching out for them specifically.
- Habit Building: We want this to become second nature long after a kid ages out of our program.
It's a simple rule, but it's the one that keeps everything else we teach actually safe to practice — see how it fits into a full session in our program lineup.
For a broader set of ocean and beach safety rules, the American Red Cross water safety guide is a solid reference.
